My mother holds a particular fondness for the name of this flower. Among the first few blooms she introduced to me as a child were the Forget-Me-Not and Chrysanthemum. She encouraged me to learn their stories and folklore and explore the meaning and history behind their names.
So, with that in mind, let’s get into it..
Myosotis: The Mouse’s Ear
Scientifically known as “Myosotis,” the term originates from the Greek words “mys” and “otis,” translating to “mouse” and “ear” respectively. This naming serves as a nod to the shape and the delicate hair of the leaves, resembling a mouse’s ear.
As a member of the Boraginaceae family, forget-me-nots share kinship with about 2,700 species, many bearing distinctive rough, hairy leaves and stems, and charming funnel-shaped flowers.
So many stories behind its name
The lovely Forget-Me-Not carries a name rich with history and folklore. A direct translation of the French phrase “ne m’oubliez pas,” it is said that King Louis XV of France himself named this flower. (In French, “ne pas” means “no,” “oubliez” translates to “forget,” and “m'” is a contraction of “me.”)
In another tale rooted in Christian lore, God was walking in the Garden of Eden, naming each plant. A little blue flower was left unnamed. It was shy and it whispered to God, “Forget me not, O Lord.” And thus, God christened it ‘Forget-Me-Not’.
Now, it will never be forgotten again.
The love that blooms quietly
Embedded in a romantic, albeit tragic, medieval tale, a knight and his beloved were strolling beside a river. As he bent down to pick a posy of flowers for her, the weight of his armor caused him to lose balance and fall into the river.
As he was being swept away by the current, he tossed the bouquet to his lady, crying, “Forget me not!”
It makes one wonder, doesn’t it? Why would a knight be clad in full armor while leisurely walking with his love? Perhaps he was on his way to war and was saying a final goodbye?
The interpretation is yours to make. Despite its uncertainty, one can’t deny the poignant romance of the tale…
Keeping that story in mind, remind yourself that love doesn’t always have to be grand or ostentatious.
Much like the knight’s heartfelt plea, these petite blooms whisper a soft call for remembrance, a subtle request for affection. They’re not demanding, simply asking not to be forgotten.
The Forget-Me-Not way of life
Life is made up of little moments that stitch together the tapestry of our existence. Often, in the rush of our daily routines, we tend to overlook these small instances.
Watching the sun rises as you drink your cup of tea, sharing laughs over the silliest joke with your loved one, smelling the earthy scent of soil after the rain, or finding silent comfort in a good book – these moments may not be grand, but they’re memorable in their own ways.
Just as the Forget-Me-Not quietly calls for attention, these moments gently knock on our doors, asking to be noticed, to be cherished. They ask us to slow down. Take a moment and not to forget the simple joy they bring.
There is joy to be found in the mundane.
I’ve found mine.
Here’s to hoping you find yours…
